Why Were There Multiple Chakra Systems?

The modern image usually presents seven chakras in fixed locations. Because of this, it is easy to assume that Tantra has always described the chakra system in exactly this way.
Historically, however, there was no single universal map.
Why Did the Number of Chakras Vary?
Because chakras were not treated as anatomical structures, but as elements of particular systems of practice.
One text might use four centers, another six, and another a larger number. Research into Tantric sources clearly shows a wide variety of chakra systems, including models based on four or six centers.
This can be compared to using different maps of the same city.
A subway map shows stations. A tourist map shows landmarks. A road map shows highways.
They are different not necessarily because one of them is wrong, but because they were created for different purposes.
What Could Vary from One System to Another?
Different systems could vary in:
– the number of chakras; – their locations; – the number of lotus petals; – associated mantras; – deities; – symbols and elements; – the sequence of internal visualization.
For this reason, the question “How many chakras are there really?” is historically misleading.
These traditions were not attempting to create a universal medical atlas of the human body. They were developing symbolic maps for particular meditation and ritual practices.
This is why the modern seven-chakra system should be understood as just one model — one that eventually became the most widely known.
