Why the History of Tantra and Neo-Tantra Are Not the Same

Historical Tantra and modern Neo-Tantra are connected, but they are not the same tradition.
What Is the Difference?
Historical Tantra developed in South Asia within Hinduism and Buddhism. It included ritual, mantra, initiation, meditation, worship, and complex religious systems.
Neo-Tantra emerged much later, primarily in the West during the twentieth century. It placed greater emphasis on themes such as:
– relationships; – sexuality; – body awareness; – emotional openness; – self-development.
Is There a Connection Between Them?
Yes. Neo-Tantra draws on certain Tantric terms, symbols, and ideas. At the same time, it has also incorporated psychology, modern spirituality, bodywork, and Western traditions of personal growth.
For this reason, it is inaccurate to present Neo-Tantra as an unchanged continuation of an ancient tradition.
Historical Tantra and Neo-Tantra are better understood as related but distinct phenomena, with different histories, contexts, and goals.
