The word Tantra comes from Sanskrit. It is connected to the root tan, which can mean “to stretch,” “to extend,” “to weave,” or “to compose.” From this root developed meanings such as “framework,” “system,” “teaching,” or “text.”
Does Tantra Mean “Weaving”?
Tantra is sometimes poetically translated as “the interconnectedness of everything” or “the weaving together of all things.” While this imagery is related to the word’s etymology, it is better understood as a modern interpretation rather than a universal historical definition.
In early Indian texts, the word tantra could refer to a system, method, teaching, or a particular text. Over time, it also came to describe a broader category of religious texts and the practices associated with them.
Why Does the Meaning Seem Different Today?
Today, the word Tantra is used to describe many different things: ancient texts, Hindu and Buddhist traditions, meditation, modern spiritual practices, relationships, and bodywork.
For this reason, the word itself does not necessarily tell us what kind of Tantra is being discussed.
Tantra is a good example of how a single ancient word can acquire many new meanings over time.
