When Did Tantra Emerge?

It is impossible to identify an exact date when Tantra first appeared. It was not created by a single person, nor did it emerge in one particular year.
Historians generally date the development of recognizable Tantric traditions to around the middle of the first millennium CE. It is during this period that clearer evidence begins to appear for systems that scholars describe as Tantric.
Does That Mean Tantra Is About 1,500 Years Old?
As a distinct historical phenomenon, roughly speaking, yes.
However, many of the ideas and practices that later became part of Tantra existed in India earlier. For this reason, it would be misleading to select a single date and say, “This is when Tantra was born.”
Over time, new rituals, texts, forms of meditation, mantra practices, and methods of deity worship gradually developed. Tantric traditions later became highly influential within both Hinduism and Buddhism.
What About the Claim That “Tantra Is 5,000 Years Old”?
This claim is often found in popular literature and advertising, but there is no reliable historical evidence that Tantra existed in its recognizable form 5,000 years ago.
The historical reality is more interesting than the simplified legend: Tantra developed gradually, changed over time, and came to include many different traditions.
For this reason, it is more accurate to ask not “In what year did Tantra appear?” but rather “How and when did different Tantric traditions develop?”
In the next article, we will explore why it is misleading to speak of Tantra as if it were one single tradition.
