The earliest Tantric texts did not appear all at once. They developed gradually within different religious traditions across India.
When Did They Appear?
Scholars identify early texts with clearly recognizable Tantric features from around the sixth and seventh centuries CE, although some individual elements can be found in earlier sources.
These texts could describe:
– mantra; – ritual; – initiation; – visualization; – worship of deities; – specific forms of meditation and yoga.
Why Are They Difficult to Date?
Many texts were copied by hand for centuries. In some cases, it is difficult to determine when the original version was composed, and later editions may differ significantly from earlier ones.
In addition, the word Tantra was not used exclusively for texts that modern scholars classify as Tantric.
For this reason, historians compare manuscripts, linguistic evidence, quotations, and references found in other sources.
The earliest Tantric texts do not represent a single book from which Tantra began. Rather, they form a broad body of literature that developed gradually over time.
