In many religious traditions, the body has been viewed as a source of limitations or as something that requires discipline. In Tantra, however, the relationship with the body was often more complex.
Why Did the Body Become Important?
Some Tantric schools regarded the body not simply as a physical container, but as an integral part of spiritual practice.
The body was associated with:
– breath;
– meditation;
– ritual;
– mantra;
– visualization;
– concepts such as chakras, prana, and subtle channels.
The body could be understood as a space through which practitioners worked with attention, consciousness, and religious experience.
Does This Mean Tantra Promoted a Cult of the Body?
Historical Tantra did not simply teach people to “love their bodies” in the modern wellness sense. The body was often understood through complex religious symbolism and used as an instrument of spiritual practice.
For this reason, modern body awareness and the historical Tantric understanding of the body are not the same thing.
In Tantra, the body could be understood not as an obstacle on the spiritual path, but as part of the path itself.
