Tantra and Ritual
Ritual played an important role in many Tantric traditions. These were not simply elaborate ceremonies, but structured actions with specific religious meanings.
Why Were Rituals Important?
Through ritual, a practitioner could:
– approach or worship a deity;
– use mantra and sacred symbols;
– practice visualization;
– undergo initiation;
– mark important stages of spiritual practice.
Ritual helped create a sacred space in which every action, word, and symbol carried meaning.
Some rituals were relatively simple, while others were highly complex and required instruction from a teacher.
It is important to understand that historical Tantric ritual is not the same as a modern wellness ritual involving candles and music. Contemporary practices may use similar terminology while having very different origins.
In Tantra, ritual was a way of bringing together action, attention, symbolism, and religious practice into an integrated whole.
