Tantra and Liberation: What Were Practitioners Seeking?
For many historical Tantric traditions, the primary goal was not relaxation or self-development, but spiritual liberation.
In Hindu traditions, the term moksha is often used to describe liberation from the ordinary cycle of existence and from a limited understanding of the self.
In Buddhist Tantra, the goals were described differently, but they were likewise connected with awakening, freedom from suffering, and a transformation in the understanding of reality.
How Did Practitioners Seek to Achieve This?
Practices could include:
– meditation;
– mantra;
– ritual;
– visualization;
– yoga;
– initiation and guidance from a guru.
At the same time, Tantra was not always concerned exclusively with liberation. Some traditions also described more worldly goals, such as protection, prosperity, power, or the attainment of special abilities.
For this reason, Tantra was not simply a method for improving well-being, but part of a much broader religious worldview.
