Today, Sacred Geometry often refers to the idea that certain shapes — circles, triangles, spirals, or the “Flower of Life” — supposedly contain universal laws of the cosmos.
Historically, however, the situation was much more specific.
What Actually Existed?
Many cultures used geometry in:
– temple architecture; – mandalas; – yantras; – decorative patterns; – ritual design.
In Tantra, for example, geometric forms could be incorporated into the Sri Yantra and other ritual diagrams. But each symbol had meaning within a particular religious tradition.
Where Does Modern Fantasy Begin?
The problem begins when symbols from very different cultures are combined into a single system and presented as evidence that all ancient civilizations possessed the same hidden “code of the universe.”
Egyptian pyramids, Indian yantras, Greek geometry, and New Age symbols may all be beautiful and fascinating — but their existence does not demonstrate that they originated from one secret body of knowledge.
What About Mathematical Patterns?
Yes, symmetry, spirals, proportions, and repeating patterns genuinely occur in nature.
But this does not mean that a particular geometric design possesses healing energy or can “reprogram space.”
Historically, Sacred Geometry is best understood as the use of geometry within religious and symbolic contexts.
The idea of a single ancient system capable of explaining the entire cosmos through a small set of geometric forms is largely a modern interpretation.
