Is Tantra Really Thousands of Years Old?
The claim that “Tantra is 5,000 years old” is quite common. However, the historical evidence does not allow us to state this with confidence.
What Do Historians Know?
Recognizable Tantric traditions become clearly traceable from around the middle of the first millennium CE.
At the same time, some individual ideas, rituals, and religious practices that later became incorporated into Tantra may be considerably older.
So Where Does the Idea of Thousands of Years Come From?
Modern marketing often combines ancient Indian culture, Yoga, spiritual practices, and Tantra into one continuous historical narrative.
It sounds appealing, but from a historical perspective, it is an oversimplification.
A more accurate way to put it is:
Tantra has ancient roots, but the claim that an unchanged form of Tantra has existed for 5,000 years is not supported by reliable historical evidence.
The history of Tantra is not the story of a single tradition preserved unchanged over millennia, but a long process in which many different schools and practices developed over time.
