Tantra did not emerge in isolation. It developed in India, where sophisticated religious traditions, philosophical schools, ritual practices, and various forms of Yoga already existed.
What Was This World Like?
Around the middle of the first millennium CE, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism were all developing actively across South Asia. Temples were being built, new texts were being composed, and the worship of Shiva, Vishnu, and the Goddess was becoming increasingly prominent.
Religion was closely connected with society, political power, and everyday life.
Where Did Tantra Fit Into This World?
Tantric traditions began to develop within already existing religions. They introduced new ritual systems, mantras, initiation practices, visualization techniques, and methods of working with the body and consciousness.
Some practices spread across different regions and even between religious traditions.
For this reason, the origins of Tantra cannot be explained by a single cause or traced to one specific place.
Tantra emerged within the complex religious world of medieval India, where different traditions, practices, and ideas were constantly interacting and changing.
