Tantra did not emerge in a single place, nor did it spread across India as one unified teaching. Different Tantric traditions developed in different regions and continually influenced one another.
How Did Tantric Ideas Spread?
Several factors played an important role:
– traveling teachers; – monasteries and temples; – royal courts; – manuscripts; – pilgrimage routes; – religious communities.
Through these networks, mantras, ritual systems, and philosophical ideas could move from one region to another and gradually change in the process.
Important centers of Tantric traditions developed in Kashmir, Bengal, Odisha, Nepal, and other parts of South Asia. At the same time, each local culture contributed its own distinctive features.
For this reason, the spread of Tantra cannot be understood as a simple movement outward from one single point across India.
Tantra developed as a network of traditions connected by the movement of people, texts, practices, and religious ideas.
