“Energy” in Tantra: What Can This Word Actually Mean?

The word energy is used constantly in modern Tantra.
“Raise your energy.” “Feel the energy.” “Unblock your energy.”
The problem is that this word can refer to very different things.
In Traditional Tantra
Traditional Tantric systems include concepts such as Shakti, Prana, and Kundalini.
But these are not the same thing.
Shakti — divine power. Prana — vital breath and internal movement. Kundalini — a particular model of latent power found in certain yogic traditions.
Translating all of these concepts with the single English word energy is convenient, but it is also overly simplistic.
What Does “I Feel Energy” Actually Mean?
A person may genuinely experience:
– warmth; – tingling; – tension; – trembling; – arousal; – relaxation; – changes in breathing; – a strong emotional reaction.
These sensations are real as subjective experiences.
But describing them as “energy” is already an interpretation.
What Does Physics Have to Do with It?
In science, energy is a precisely defined physical quantity that can be measured.
When people in wellness contexts talk about “energy flow,” they usually mean something very different.
For this reason, the statement “Tantra works with energy” explains almost nothing by itself.
It is always necessary to clarify:
which specific concept is being discussed, what the person is actually experiencing, and what they are actually doing.
The key point is simple: the spiritual use of the word “energy” and energy in physics are not the same thing.
