Chakras: What Were They in Historical Traditions?

Today, chakras are often presented as seven colored points arranged along the spine. Historically, however, chakra systems were far more diverse.
The Sanskrit word chakra means “wheel” or “circle.” In Tantric Yoga, the term was used for imagined centers within the subtle body.
These were not physical organs that could be discovered during surgery.
What Did a Practitioner Actually Do?
A practitioner might visualize particular points or lotus-like centers within the body.
For example, they could focus mentally on a center in the lower part of the body, imagine a lotus, a specific symbol, and a mantra there, and then direct attention upward through a central channel.
In this sense, a chakra functioned primarily as part of an internal map used for meditation and Yoga.
Think of an ordinary subway map. The lines on the map do not look exactly like the streets of the real city — the map is designed to help you understand the route.
Chakra systems worked in a similar way: they described an internal route for practice.
Were There Always Seven Chakras?
No — and this is a very important point.
Different Tantric texts describe systems containing four, five, six, nine, and other numbers of centers.
One of the best-known later systems appears in the sixteenth-century text Sat-Cakra-Nirupana. It describes six principal chakras in detail, while Sahasrara at the crown of the head occupies a special position. This system later had a major influence on the modern idea of seven chakras.
Why Were Chakras Used at All?
Not to diagnose people with statements such as “your heart chakra is blocked.”
Historically, chakras were used in practices involving mantra, visualization, kundalini, and the movement of attention through the body.
A more accurate description is therefore:
Chakras are elements of traditional symbolic maps of the body used in certain forms of Tantra and Yoga for meditation and internal practice.
The familiar modern image of seven rainbow-colored chakras is a separate historical development.
